Every market quotes bitcoin by the coin — $64,000, give or take a bear market — and that single convention has produced a decade of “I can’t afford bitcoin” misunderstanding. The protocol itself doesn’t think in bitcoins at all. It thinks in satoshis: indivisible hundred-millionths, named after the pseudonymous author of the whitepaper. Once you read prices in sats, both the affordability confusion and several marketing tricks disappear.

The two middle rows exist mostly in old wallet settings and forum posts; in practice the ecosystem settled on exactly two units — BTC for savings, sats for everything small. Lightning invoices, on-chain fees and tipping all quote sats.

The two conversions worth memorizing

Sats per dollar — divide 100,000,000 by the BTC price. At $64,000 that’s about 1,563 sats per dollar; at $100,000 it’s a clean 1,000; at $126,000 (the October 2025 peak) it was 794. Note the direction: more sats per dollar means a cheaper bitcoin — sats-per-dollar is a price chart flipped upside down.

Dollars per sat — the same fraction inverted: $64,000 ÷ 100,000,000 = $0.00064. This number is why “sat-cent parity” is a beloved milestone among bitcoiners: one sat equals one US cent only when one bitcoin equals one million dollars. Any pitch implying sats are “pennies” today is off by a factor of fifteen.

Why the denomination matters practically

Fees are quoted in sats. On-chain transaction fees are expressed in sats per virtual byte (sat/vB); a typical transaction spans a few hundred vB, so a 20 sat/vB fee is several thousand sats — dollars, not cents. Reading fees in BTC (0.00004500…) is how people misjudge them by orders of magnitude in both directions. Stacking has a native unit. Recurring buyers accumulate amounts that look like dust in BTC (0.00078…) and like progress in sats (78,000). The framing isn’t cosmetic — a unit you can count is a unit you’ll keep counting, which is half of why the “stacking sats” idiom took over recurring-buy culture. Precision has a floor. The ledger cannot represent half a satoshi. When bitcoin’s price makes one sat too valuable for everyday precision (a real concern only well past sat-cent parity), amounts smaller than a sat can already be routed on Lightning, which accounts internally in millisatoshis — but on-chain, the sat is bedrock.

The supply math that explains everything

Bitcoin’s cap is 21 million coins — but that’s 2.1 quadrillion satoshis, roughly 250,000 sats for every person on Earth if divided evenly. The scarcity story and the divisibility story are the same story told at two zoom levels: the coin is scarce, the unit is abundant, and the price of one is just the price of the other times a hundred million.
